Believe it or not…it is already October 15^th! And what does that mean? Well, that means that we are now ready to help you pay tribute and honor to a special mom, dad, or teen. That’s right! We want to highlight those special and exceptional people that you consider a “hero” in your life. Starting TODAY, we will, on a monthly basis, randomly pick an “at home” hero to feature either on the Heroes At Home Video blog or Heroes at Home Radio podcast show. There are sooo many people out there doing great and wonderful things, but they never get recognized. Instead, we are bombarded with news of negative events, people, and discouraging information. Let’s work together to change that and it all starts with giving the spotlight to some very deserving people out there!

So, how to do get your special person recognized? Easy!

YOU CAN HONOR YOUR HERO AT HOME ONE OF TWO WAYS:

Option #1 – Create a video introducing your hero!
Want your hero featured on Heroes at Home TV? Send a short video introducing and explaining why he / she is a hero … you can even let them speak for themselves on the video. (You can upload this video to Youtube, Vimeo or another video sharing site like we have done here with TinyPic – http://tinypic.com/r/350utub/7.  Send Us an email info@heroesathomeradio.com with the link to this video and your contact information.

Option #2 – Write a letter introducing your hero!
For those who are camera-shy, just go to the Contact Us page on www.heroesathomeradio.com or email info@heroesathomeradio.com. Make sure to type “Hero at MY Home” in the subject line. Tell us who your special hero is and why they should be featured on the Heroes At Home Radio podcast show.

REMEMBER TO INCLUDE YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION (name, email, phone number).

What better way to let the world know how special and appreciated someone is for all that they do!

Heroes At Home Radio: Interview w/ Single Parent and Entrepreneur

I am so glad that I had the opportunity to recently interview an exceptional single parent and entrepreneur. She built her business with very little initial support and some personal challenges along the way as well. Let me introduce you to SEO Markting consultant, Lea Charlton.

Lea  is now living her dream as a work at home mother and the “driving force” behind the scenes of the successful internet-based consultancy, ALMC Solutions. Lea ventured into this Internet Marketing Industry because she needed a flexible way to provide for her family. As a single mother, she had been trying to change the quality of her family’s life for years until she learned how to use the Internet. In the late 1990′s, she learned all about the World Wide Web and developed her Internet Marketing skills during the “dot com” boom. She is a self-taught .COM professional and eventually returned to college for computer programming and business management after her initial success on the Internet. After gaining more experience in helping more clients obtain search engine rank increases, Lea became a full time Internet Marketing Specialist in 2004. As a native of “the steel city”, she chose the handle “Pittsburgh SEO Lady”. This was all done from her virtual office. ALMC Solutions now works with consultants throughout the US. I am soo glad that I had the opportunity to interview another exceptional person who truly cares about the next generation and is an authority on the subject of stress and resiliency as it relates to kids and teens. Who is this person you ask? Well, let me introduce you to Dr. George Everly:

Dr. George Everly is an accomplished author and co-author. Among his publications is the ground breaking book, “The Resilient Child: Seven Essential Lessons for your Child’s Happiness and Success” In the book, Dr. Everly provides seven lessons that will help to teach our children how to be resilient and how to build inner strength. George S. Everly, Jr., Ph.D. is “one of the ‘founding fathers’ of modern resiliency and stress management. He is on the faculties of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland. In an age where children are under a lot of stress, this book is an important one to help avoid the possible negatives that could go along with that stress at any early age.

First and foremost Happy 2010 to you all! Wow … it is hard to believe that not only is this a brand new year, but a brand new decade has been ushered in. Most endured a rough 2009 full of trials and tribulations. It is now time to let go of the past in order to regroup, refocus, and reinvent ourselves!

In 2009, our focus was primarily on launching “Heroes At Home Radio”. We also launched this blog, started work on a brand new website (to be announced very soon), and did LOTS of research and study on issues related to not only to single parents but teens and pre-teens from single parent homes as well. And last, but definitely not least, in early 2009 I started work on my first book. Whew…what a busy year!

In 2010, the focus will slightly shift. While “Heroes At Home Radio” will continue to bring you great and informative guests around single parent issues and topics, the main focus will be on the mental and emotional health of pre-teens and teens. Products will be introduced to help in battling some of the alarming statistics recently released:

1)      Teen pregnancy is on the rise from 2006 by 3-5% (depending on the geographical area)

2)      Gang violence and adolescent deaths have increased steadily since 2007

3)      Anxiety and depression are plaguing youths today more than in previous decades

Stay tuned as we roll out new information that will, hopefully, continue to support and bless our single parents, but will also strengthen our youth as well. With the things going on in the world today, I am sure we ALL can agree that we have a lot of work to do to keep the next generation on the road to success! Let’s commit to working together to make sure that happens!

This week on Heroes at Home Radio, we spent some quality time talking to two dynamic ladies (Annie Fox and Sarah Newton) about the generation differences as well as character development with children and teens. It was enlightening for me as well…being a product of Generation X and being raised by a single parent.

I can recall viewing relationships as “sacred” and something to strive for in my life. While I did not have a father in my home, I saw how my mother struggled and decided that one day, I would indeed have a healthy marital relationship.

In talking to Sarah Newton from Gen Y Guide this week, she pointed out that unlike Generation X, Generation Y kids view relationships a lot differently. They are not necessarily driven by the desire to have a monogamous, two parent home ideal existence. They embrace alternative relationships much more freely (i.e. same sex marriages, co-habitation without marriage, etc.) Also, Generation Y has a more “I am entitled” feeling and attitude than those in Generation X.

Have we, as a society, created this almost selfish posture in our young people today? Have we somehow through our own preoccupation with work, life, striving to get ahead, forgot to instill certain values and attitudes in our kids?

Now, there is nothing wrong with our young people being more open-minded and embracing and accepting the differences in others. However, we have to make sure that they do not become more obsessed with “me” (the individual) and less focused on “us” (the community at large). Also, Annie Fox talked about parents not relinquishing authority with their kids; that parents must maintain a certain amount of control, but not at the expense of being disrespectful to the child.

Maybe if we all exercised respect to each other (parent to child, child to parent, families to other families, etc.) we could have a Generation Y that is both open-minded, progressive, and accepting…but also less focused on self. Hmm…something to ponder!
